Hypertension Increased in Psoriasis Treated with NSAIDs, Cyclosporine or Steroids

Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis patient have significantly higher rates of comorbidity, including hypertension (HTN). This population-based, nested case–control study analyzed an inception psoriasis cohort from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database between 2000–2010.

Specifically they identified 1530 newly diagnosed hypertension psoriasis patients and compared these to age- and gender-matched controls. HTN was associated with the current use of cyclosporine (OR = 7.13; 95% CI 1.85–27.49), NSAIDs (OR = 2.2; 95% CI 1.95–2.49), and systemic glucocorticoids (OR = 1.42; 95% CI 1.23–1.64). Increasing doses or combined use of NSAIDS and prednisone further increased the hypertension risk. The risk of hypertension associated with glucocorticoids, was greatest among patients aged 49 years or less.
