Vitamin D has an important immunomodulatory effect and it has been postulated that vitamin D supplementation may provide adjunctive disease control in SLE. A small randomized trial from Brazil included 45 juvenile SLE patients who received 50,000 IU/week or placebo. Although there was no difference in proteinuria, the vitamin D group had significantly lower SLEDAI scores, lower dsDNA levels, joint scores and fatigue levels. More research and replication is needed.
