Lupus May Be at Increased Risk for Dementia

Neuropsychiatric manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may occur in up to half of patients in their lifetime.

However, dementia is often not reported or studied in cohorts with neurologic disease in lupus.

A nationwide cohort in 2004–2008 included SLE (n = 1,074) and non-SLE (n = 5,370; age- and sex-matched controls) and were followed for up to 7 years for the out come of dementia.

SLE patients had a higher rate of dementia 357 per 100,000 person-years) comparted to the non-SLE cohort (180 per 100,000 person-years); with a crude hazard ratio [HR] of 1.92 (P  0.05).

Patients with SLE may have a higher risk of dementia. It was not apparent from these studies what the risk factors for demential were.
