Severe Psoriasis Associated with a Renal Disease Risk

There have been several reports of psoriasis being linked to chronic renal disease in the literature. Another population-based study has also found a link between severe psoriasis and kidney disease.

A report from the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology has found an almost fivefold increase in the risk of immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) and a doubling in the risk of glomerular disease.

These results are in line with the observation that psoriasis patients have a substantial risk for multiple comorbidities. It appears renal disease can now be added to this list.

A previous study in BMJ (2013 Oct;347:f5961) analyzed a UK population-based patient database and found the risk of chronic kidney disease was nearly doubled for those with severe psoriasis.

Grewal and coinvestigators compared 206,000 psoriasis patients with nearly 1 million controls and found that only those psoriatic patients with severe psoriasis had a higher risk of IgA nephropathy or glomerular disease. All psoriasis patients and thos with mild disease had no significant associations with either IgAN or glomerular disease.
