Strange ICD-10 Codes (Best of 2015)

The range of categories and diagnostic possibilities is astronomical with the new ICD-10 and its 68,000 codes.

HealthcareDIVE.com has published a humorous piece on 16 absurd uses of ICD-10. Rheumatologists probably won't use any of these codes, but isn't it nice to know they're among the 68,000 code set should you need them? These include:

  1. V97.33XD: Sucked into jet engine, subsequent encounter.
  2. W51.XXXA: Accidental striking against or bumped into by another person, sequela.
  3. V00.01XD: Pedestrian on foot injured in collision with roller-skater, subsequent encounter.
  4. Y93.D: Activities involved arts and handcrafts.
  5. 12.Z99.89: Dependence on enabling machines and devices, not elsewhere classified.
  6. Y92.146: Swimming-pool of prison as the place of occurrence of the external cause.
  7. S10.87XA: Other superficial bite of other specified part of neck, initial encounter.
  8. W55.41XA: Bitten by pig, initial encounter.
  9. W61.62XD: Struck by duck, subsequent encounter.
  10. Z63.1: Problems in relationship with in-laws.
  11. W220.2XD: Walked into lamppost, subsequent encounter.
  12. Y93.D: V91.07XD: Burn due to water-skis on fire, subsequent encounter.
  13. W55.29XA: Other contact with cow, subsequent encounter.
  14. W22.02XD: V95.43XS: Spacecraft collision injuring occupant, sequela.
  15. W61.12XA: Struck by macaw, initial encounter.
  16. R46.1: Bizarre personal appearance.
