Prof. Antoni Chan, PhD, FRCP, is Consultant Rheumatologist, Professor and Head of Rheumatology at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, Reading, United Kingdom. He is a also a specialist physician with a broad interest in internal medicine. He has been on the faculty of RheumNow since 2019. His specialist area of research is in spondyloarthropathies and digital healthcare technologies including artificial intelligence. He is a full member of ASAS and GRAPPA. He is on the working group of the British Society for Rheumatology (BSR) axSpA biologics guideline group. He won the BSR Best Practice Award in 2016 and 2024 for an innovative pain management and primary care educational programme. In 2018 he received the Patient Choice Award for Best Care by a Rheumatologist and in 2023 the Gold Changemaker Award from the National Axial Spondyloarthritis Society (NASS) UK. He leads the Axial Spondyloarthritis service in his hospital and his team have published their work on reducing delay to diagnosis in this condition. Follow him on X @synovialjoints.
There were new developments in the treatment of axial Spondyloarthritis (AS) at ACR 2019. The first area is on the use of anti-IL17A drugs, secukinumab and ixekizumab in non-radiographic AS. The second area is the use of JAK-1 inhibitor Upadacitinib in radiographic AS.
