Novel Mechanisms for Rheumatoid Arthritis

The Journal of Leukocyte Biology has reported mechanisms whereby synovial CD4+ T cells producing IL-21 can contribute to the pathogenesis of RA by activating synovial fibroblasts.

Investigators isolated T cells from synovial fluid that produced IL-21 and TNF and compared these with cells that did not.

Cells producing IL-21 were put in culture with synovial fibroblasts and induced the proinflammatory cytokines in excess.

These results suggest that a combined therapy targeting IL-21 and TNF might be beneficial for patients that do not respond to anti-TNF therapy or other current therapies.
