The Spirit of ACR 2016

All week I’ve attempted to catch the spirit of ACR and rheumatology in a picture or quote, but after attending ACR 2016 in Washington, DC, I found myself surrounded by examples.

The science is the backbone, but as Dr. Ronan Kavanagh reminded me yesterday, “A meeting isn’t just about the science just like a BBQ isn’t about the food.” The spirit and strength in ACR is exemplified by the tireless program directors who teach students, residents, and fellows to ensure our future is well-trained. It is found in the daily thoughts of the pioneers and innovators in the basic sciences and beyond who fight for funding for our expansion. The heart of rheumatology is in the smiles, laughter, and tears of our clinical rheumatologists who provide great care to patients all while struggling with legislature and prior authorizations which can limit drug access. It is in the brilliant lecturers who fly around the globe to continue education in our burgeoning field.

The soul of rheumatology remains steadfast in our patient and physician advocates who passionately provide support. And, it is the bright future and enthusiasm found every day in our trainees.

I have loved every moment of ACR 2016 and I’m looking forward to seeing you all again in 2017.

I enjoyed all of the reports and the summaries of the meeting in RheumNow, but none more than this one. Even after attending for nearly 30 years, this is how I feel! Thank you, Dr Huston. Eric Matteson
