Dr. Marcy B. Bolster is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and is the Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Rheumatology Fellowship Training Program. She has a particular interest in supporting professional development across the spectrum of learners through mentorship and coaching. She has a strong interest in systemic sclerosis (SSc) and interstitial lung disease ILD), and she is a co-investigator for several clinical trials for patients with SSc. She was a member of the core leadership team for the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Guidelines for Screening, Monitoring, and Treatment of Interstitial Lung Disease. Dr. Bolster has received awards including the ACR Distinguished Program Director Award (2019), the Mass General Brigham Outstanding Program Director Award (2019), and the Arthritis Foundation Marian Ropes Lifetime Achievement Award (2021).
While we know there are certain clinical features serving as predictors that patients with SSc may develop ILD, including diffuse skin disease and serologies such as anti-Scl-70 and Th/To antibodies, it is imperative that clinicians consider that any patient, particularly early in their disease course (5 years of disease since the first non-Raynaud phenomenon symptom) could develop ILD.
