Addressing Disparities and Unequal Burdens in ILD

Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) represent a complex spectrum of conditions that share one  unifying truth: they are almost always serious, progressive, and life-altering. But for many patients,  the burden of disease does not fall evenly. We are increasingly learning that where you live, who  you are, and the resources available to you, can strongly influence how ILD develops and  worsens. Understanding these disparities is not about pointing fingers. Rather, it is about uncovering opportunities to deliver better, fairer care.

  • Dr. Deji Adegunsoye is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago and the Scientific Director of the UCMC Interstitial Lung Disease Program, where he delivers cutting-edge care to patients with pulmonary fibrosis. A dedicated pulmonologist with a doctoral degree in in Genetics, Genomics, and Systems Biology, he has a strong interest in prognostic modeling, the genetics of pulmonary fibrosis, and addressing health care disparities. His research focuses on clinical prediction models and translational approaches to improve survival, prevent lung function decline, and enhance risk prediction in interstitial lung disease. By leveraging genetic data from diverse racial groups and applying advanced statistical techniques, he has identified practical strategies to optimize pharmacotherapy and improve clinical decision-making in fibrotic lung disease.
