Una Makris, MD, MSc is an Associate Professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center in the Division of Rheumatic Diseases and a Staff Physician/ clinical investigator at the Dallas VA.
Dr. Makris is a health services researcher who focuses on the intersection of rheumatology and aging. She is passionate about developing behavioral interventions that improve outcomes that matter most to complex older adults with comorbid pain and depression. She leads mentoring initiatives for the Division and Department of Medicine at UTSW.
Dr. Makris lives in Dallas, TX with her two daughters and husband and enjoys traveling to spend time with family.
As I was training as a rheumatologist, I found myself drawn to rheumatologic disorders in older patients. In particular, I was intrigued by programmatic development that could improve both disease outcomes and older adults’ quality of life. This was not the “sexiest” topic in rheumatology and it was hard to figure out how to get started. I was extremely fortunate to find a mentor.
