Mortality with Interstitial Lung Disease in Rheumatoid Arthritis Save
Annals of Rheumatic Disease has published a Danish population based study demonstrating the high mortality rates seen with interstitial lung disease (ILD).
Between the years 2004 and 2016, researchers identified 679 RA patients with RA-ILD and matched these (age, gender) against 11 722 RA patients without ILD.
During this time frame the number of prevalent RA patients doubled from 15352 to 35362 individuals. RA-ILD was found in 2.2% of incident RA patients. While most ILD cases developed over time, one-third RA-ILD cases were diagnosed within 1 year prior to and 1 year after the RA diagnosis.
Mortality frequency over time:
- One-year mortality = 13.9% in RA-ILD and 3.8% in non-ILD RA
- 5-year mortality = 39.0 in RA-ILD and 18.2% in non-ILD RA
- 10-year mortality was 60.1% in RA-ILD and 34.5% in non-ILD RA.
Risk of death with ILD was 2 to 10 times higher than non-ILD RA, irrespective of follow-up period.
The greatest risk of death was seen in the first months after the diagnosis of RA-ILD. Risk was higher in males and in patients without other comorbidities.
