Rheumatoid Arthritis Increases Risk of Repeat Coronary Events and Mortality Save
Studies have shown that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients have increased risk of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and may suffer from poorer short-term outcomes after ACS. The long-term outcomes in patients with RA with ACS was shown to be worse than matched non-RA patients also with ACS.
Researchers from the Karolinsk Hospital and Institute in Sweden analyzed their cohort of 1135 RA patients with incident ACS between 2007 and 2010, and compared outcomes with a cohort of 3184 non-RA patients wiht incident ACS . Specifically they looked at 1-year outcomes, risks for ACS recurrence and mortality.
The data shows a nearly 30% inceased risk of ACS recurrence, and mortality in RA, both at 1 and 2 year followups. These rates were not clearly influenced by secondary preventive treatments.
RA patients are at greater risk risk of ACS recurrence and of death following ACS event, compared with general population.
