Increased Cardiovascular Events in Lupus

A New York surveillance registry (Manhattan Lupus Surveillance Program) estimates higher rates of cardiovascular events (CVE) among systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, especially amongst younger males, Hispanic/Latinos and non-Hispanic Black patients.

MLSP enrolled prevalent adult SLE patients and this analysis reported CVE (myocardial infarction or cerebrovascular accident). Data from the 2009–2010 NHANES and the 2013–2014 NYC HANES were used to calculate CVE prevalence.

CVE prevalence was higher among patients with SLE. CVE were reported in nearly 14 % of 1,285 MLSP SLE patients. Higher rates were seen in

  • Men (ARR:1.7, 95%CI:1.2–2.5)
  • Older adults (age > 60 ARR:2.5, 95%CI:1.7–3.8)
  • Hispanic/Latinoa (ARR:3.1, 95%CI:1.4-7.0)
  • non-Hispanic Blacka (ARR:3.5, 95%CI1.6-7.9)
