Maria Sandovici, MD, PhD

Maria Sandovici, MD, PhD, is a rheumatologist working at the Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), the Netherlands. An important part of her clinical work is at the expertise center for vasculitis at UMCG. In her research Maria Sandovici focuses on understanding the development of giant cell arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica in relation to ageing of the immune system, and on treatment of these two related diseases.

Choosing steroid sparing therapies in PMR

Despite the official recognition of PMR as a distinct disease more than 60 years ago, patients with PMR are still largely treated with steroids (glucocorticoids, mostly prednisone). The persistent broad use of glucocorticoids in PMR is related to their quick initial efficacy in the majority of patients with PMR, their low price and the lack of alternative treatments and paucity of glucocorticoid-sparing treatments.
