Outcry Over the Cost of Drugs

Several news articles have addressed the rising concern by patients and physicians over the cost of newer drugs. This issue comes to a head as more than 100 oncologists from top cancer hospitals around the U.S. have issued a harsh rebuke over soaring cancer-drug prices and called for new regulations to control them. As of 2013 there are over 15 drugs costing more than $100,000 per year. At issue is whether the rise in cost has been matched by a rise in outcomes.

A NY Times article notes that pharmaceutical cost transparency bills have been introduced in at least six state legislatures in the last year, aiming to make drug companies justify their price. What started out as a individual patient concern has become a federal headache. (Citation source http://buff.ly/1JDsTpi)

On the same subject, AARP reviews the effects on the elderly, noting that newer biologics and chemotherapy drugs are often > $100,000 per year. (Citation source http://buff.ly/1GLbcC4)
