Statins Improve CV risk in RA Save
Since publication of the Jupiter trial that showed statin effects may include the lowering of C-reactive protein levels and inflammation, there have been several efforts to study the adjunctive effects of statins in rheumatoid arthritis treatment.
A recent Annals of Rheumatic Disease article shows statin therapy in RA led to a 21% decreased risk of dying from any cause. The protective effect resembled results from trials of patients without RA and somewhat exceeded those from population-level analyses of statins as preventive therapy. The data was derived from an analysis of the UK general population database, and does not include any outcomes related to RA activity or damage over time. However, studies done to date suggest statins have little or no effect on RA inflammation. Nevertheless, the findings of this study support the role of comorbidity management in RA.
