Medscape: Physician Burnout Report 2022 Save
The annual Medscape Physician Burnout & Depression survey has been published for 2022 and Rheumatology burnout stats have improved, now ranking 10th (middle of the pack).
The survey included over 13000 physicians from 29 specialties. While burnout amongst physician increased from 42% last year to 47% this year, Rheumatology burnout has decreased from from 50% to 46% (tied for 10th overall; see below). The top 3 this year were Emergency medicine (60%), Critical care (51%), and OB-GYN(53%).
In 2018, burnout in rheumatology was amongst the lowest of medical subspecialties at 38%. Only 10% of rheumatologists said they were burned out and depressed (the average was 14%). Rheumatologists ranked in the middle of "being happy at work" (27%).
Who is more likely to be burnt out overall?
- Women > Men
- Outpatient clinic > Hospital > Office, multispecialty > Academic > Office, Solo practice
Reasons for burnout included: too many beaurocratic tasks (60%), too many work hours (34%), lack of respect (39%) and insufficient compensation (29%).
