NSAIDs are Risky in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease

Little is known about what happens when NSAIDs are used in patients with chronic kidned disease (CKD), especially those with hypertension. Using health insurance claims data from Taiwan, Hsu and coworkers examined the risk of CKD in 31976 patient not on NSAIDs, or those taking NSAIDS for more or less than 90 days (Citation source http://buff.ly/1Mwq7re).

They found that those taking NSAIDs for >3 months were 32 percent more likely to have chronic kidney disease than those who were not on NSAIDS. In addition, participants who typically took NSAIDs more than once a day had a 23 percent greater risk of developing CKD than people who didn’t use NSADS. Even if patients used NSAIDs for less than three months, they still had an 18 percent higher risk of developing CKD.
