Comorbidities Abound in Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a highly prevalent disorder with different studies and populations showing a prevalence of 2.1% to 6.4% in the general population.  A retrospective review from Olmstead county revealed that among 1111 patients with fibromyalgia, greater than 50% had 7 or more chronic conditions. Most frequent comorbidities included DJD (88.7%), depression (75.1%), migraines/chronic headaches (62.4%) and anxiety (56.5%). Nearly 40% were taking >3 medications for symptoms of fibromyalgia. Sleep aids were the most commonly prescribed medications (33.3%) followed by selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (28.7%), opioids (22.4%) and serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (21.0%).
