Ultrasound Training Escalates in the United States

A recent report cites the frequency of musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound (US) education in US residency and fellowship training programs. A 2015 survey was sent to program directors to identify cites with formal musculoskeletal ultrasound training, the components of such training and case volume.

Response rates ranged from 23-33% and among these, MSK US training was given in 100% of physical medicine and and 90% of rheumatology programs, MSK US is also taught in 65% of radiology and 88% of sports medicine programs, Training includes didactic lecturesand hands-on scanning. Case volume was lowest for radiology and highest for sports medicine trainees.

The majority of programs surveyed offer MSK ultrasound training. However, this experience is even more widespread in other medical specialties, and hands-on training and experience tend to be greater in other specialties than in radiology.
