No Link Between Autoimmune Diseases and Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance

Annals of Internal Medicine reports a study of more than 75,000 persons screened for monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and found no association between autoimmune rheumatic disease (AIRD) and MGUS.

While MGUS may be a precursor to multiple myeloma, the observations of MGUS with AIRD questions the association.

A University of Iceland cross-sectional study of 75,422 adults screened for MGUS and AIRD. They found 10,818 with AIRD and 599 of the AIRD patients had MGUS (61 with a prior clinical diagnosis and 538 diagnosed with screening). A diagnosis of an autoimmune disease was not associated with MGUS (PR, 1.05 [95% CI, 0.97 to 1.15]).

The authors determined that the diagnosis of an autoimmune diseases was not associated with MGUS, but it was associated with a prior clinical diagnosis of MGUS (PR, 2.11 [CI, 1.64 to 2.70]).

The study suggests that recommendations to routinely screen AIRD patients for MGUS may not be warranted.
