Sleep, Fatigue and Depression in Psoriatic Arthritis

Comorbidities are highly prevalent in psoriatic disease. A recent study in Arthritis Research & Therapy suggests a high prevalence of sleep disturbances, fatigue, and anxiety/depression in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) that is unrelated to skin disease musculoskeletal (MSK) manifestations.

A study of 137 Norwegian PsA patients assessed skin, MSK features, and ratings on sleep, fatigue and anxiety/depression.

PsA patients with a mean disease duration of 8.8 years had a moderate degree of sleep disturbances (38.0%), fatigue (44.5%), and anxiety/depression (38.0%).  Pain, fatigue, and higher mHAQ were associated with poor sleep and fatigue was associated with anxiety/depression.

Sleep disturbances, fatigue, and anxiety/depression were frequently seen in PsA patients, but these are not linked to skin or joint measures of PsA activity.
