Osteonecrosis in Lupus Save
A single center analysis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients found symptomatic osteonecrosis (ON) in nearly 10%.
Researchers analyzed data from 912 SLE patients admitted to the hospital (1981 to 2012). Of these 912 SLE patients, 97 had symptomatic ON with an overall prevalence of 10.6%.
SLE patients with ON tended to be older at diagnosis (34.2 vs 27.9 years) and the interval fromSLE diagnosis to OA onset was a mean of 70.7± 60.2 (range = 0-216) months.
Symptomatic ON most commonly affected the hips (68%), and the knees (38%). Hip and knee joint survival rates were 51% and 88% at 5 years and 43% and 84%, respectively at 10 years.
Symptomatic ON in SLE has poorer outcomes in the hip compared to the knee.
