This week on the podcast, Dr. Jack Cush is joined by special guest, Dr. Kathryn Dao to review the news and journal reports from the past week on RheumNow.com. They discuss unmet needs in gout, obesity and CV disease in PsA and should you check ANCA antibodies in SLE?

  1. Painful Truth of #Gout - affects 2–4% adults in USA, UK, & Europe; >10% Asia-Pacific pts. The global burden of gout is increasing. - Majority of pts not on ULT - Majority not T2T monitored - health literacy on gout is vital https://t.co/ypomR2hhFX

  2. FDA has approved subcutaneous (SC) vedolizumab (Entyvio) for maintenance in adults with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis (UC) after induction therapy with intravenous vedolizumab https://t.co/0RD2TW1HgL

  3. Int'l cohort study of 431 established #PSA pts shows PsA patients w/ comorbid obesity were 2.5–3 folds less likely in remission/LDA (ORs 0.31, 0.39) vs non-obese. Obese PsA were more women, w/ higher TJC, pain, enthesitis counts & worse QOL https://t.co/OU1D14vLwv

  4. Microvascular CV Disease with Severe Psoriasis

  5. Multicentre retrospective study of 92 pts with paraneoplastic arthritis (PA), found PA seen more w/ hematological malignancies (lymphomas 26%) and solid malignancy (most were lung CA 41.5%). PA pts more likely to be CCP+ (P=0.014). https://t.co/GVBwIRDYJD https://t.co/JBXJPlg5M9

  6. Study compared 491 SLE pts tested for ANCA Abs w/ 171 ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) pts. 46 SLE pts were ANCA+. ANCA-positive LN have worse baseline renal function and lower protein remission rates . https://t.co/jlikQlW9OR

One solution to assist in better management gout by PCPs might be making Rheumatology rotations compulsory in IM and Family practice residencies. Might also help better use ordering ANAs!!!
